This policy explains what information Purposed CIC collects, why we collect it, how we use it, and what your rights are under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). We have written it in plain English because we think you deserve to understand what happens to your information.
Who we are
Purposed CIC is the data controller for all information collected through this website and the Ellipsis Campaign. Our registered address is [address once confirmed]. You can contact us at hello@purposed.org with any data protection questions. Our ICO registration number is [once confirmed].
What information we collect and why
When you sign the manifesto: we collect your name and email address. We use this to add you to the Ellipsis Coalition register (publicly displayed with your name, unless you ask us not to) and to send you the Ellipsis Letter and coalition updates — but only if you have opted in. The mailing list opt-in box is unticked by default. Signing the manifesto alone does not add you to any mailing list.
When you submit a story: we collect the content of your submission, your chosen display name (anonymous, first name only, or full name), and the format of your submission. If you complete the optional demographic section, we also collect that information. Demographic data is stored separately from your submission and is never published in a way that identifies you.
When you opt into ERC research: we collect your submission and any responses to the secondary research questions, and link these to your demographic data (where provided) for analysis. This data is always anonymised before a researcher looks at it — meaning it is separated from any identifying information at the point of analysis. If you later ask us to delete your data, we will delete your identifiable record. Anonymised, aggregate data already incorporated into published research cannot be disaggregated and is retained.
When you register interest in Ellipsis OS or the Ambassador programme: we collect your name, email address, and the information you provide in the interest or application form. We use this only to follow up on your enquiry.
When you contact us: we collect your name and email address and use these to respond to you. We do not add contact form enquiries to any mailing list.
Website analytics: we use a privacy-preserving analytics tool that does not use cookies and does not collect personally identifiable information. We use this data only to understand how people use our website so we can improve it.
How long we keep your information
Coalition register entries: for as long as your name remains on the register. You can ask to be removed at any time by emailing hello@purposed.org.
Story submissions: permanently, unless you ask us to remove yours. If you ask us to remove your story, we will remove it from the public Gallery within 14 days. Anonymised data already incorporated into published research is retained.
ERC research data: up to three years from collection, unless incorporated into published research in anonymised form.
Contact form data: 12 months.
Mailing list data: until you unsubscribe.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct inaccurate data, ask us to delete your data (subject to the retention exceptions above), withdraw consent at any time without this affecting anything already done with your data before withdrawal, and complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk if you believe we have handled your data incorrectly.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@purposed.org with the subject line “Data Rights Request.” We will respond within one month.
Third parties
We do not sell your data to anyone. We do not share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. Where we use third-party tools to store or process data, we ensure they are bound by appropriate data processing agreements under UK GDPR Article 28.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date above and notify coalition members by email.
